The Dutch imported tourmaline from Sri Lanka in 1703 to Western and Central Europe. The new gems were name Turamali, a Sinhalese word that is thought to mean "mixed colors.” An appropriate name, as there are many varieties of Tourmaline recognized in the trade today: Black (schorl), which is the most common variety, blue (indicolite), pink and red (rubellite), brown (dravite), green, multicolored, and even a white variety. "Watermelon Tourmaline" is a crystal with green on the outside and pink in the middle. Today, Tourmaline is found in many countries, including Burma, United States, Brazil, and Zimbabwe.
